HISTORIC PRESERVATION GROUP CALLS FOR PROSECUTION FOR PUTNAM GRAVE DESECRATION
Crescent City, FL – Guardians of American History (“Guardians”) was shocked to see the disturbance of the Braddock Family Cemetery in Crescent City, Florida that was recently discovered and publicized on WJXT News4jax.com.
The historic cemetery was reportedly acquired for development by two out-of-state investors in August 2024. Since that time, multiple gravestones have been removed, with the owners shockingly advertising the gravestones for sale.
Most Floridians, indeed, most Americans, are repulsed by cemetery desecration, and are surprised that the owners of this property would have knowingly purchased a cemetery with the intention of bulldozing it and building on it.
Around Florida there have been shocking revelations about public entities and others acquiring and re-developing cemeteries, without re-interring the souls, as required by Florida law.
“This is a disturbing trend, and one that must be nipped in the bud right now” said Guardian Wayde Alford.
“Florida law is very clear, you just can’t move a grave marker, it’s a felony. Only legally authorized persons can do so, and only under certain conditions, and we do not believe those have been followed” Alford added.
“Guardians have issued a Cease and Desist letter to the owners demanding return of the missing gravestones and we are calling on Sheriff DeLoach to enforce the existing laws to make an example that burial grounds are off limits to developers” said David McCallister, attorney for Guardians.
“We call on law enforcement to immediately resolve this by collecting the documentation necessary to arrest the perpetrators and on the Florida State Attorney’s office to prosecute them” Alford concluded.
Concerned citizens interested in taking action to protect this hallowed ground are encouraged to contact Sheriff DeLoach at HDeloach@putnamsheriff.org or at 386-329-0800.
